5 dead in apparent murder-suicide

INGRAM, Texas — Five people were dead Sunday after an apparent early morning murder-suicide in Central Texas.

John David Young, 38, an employee at a local aircraft plant, apparently was the shooter in the deaths of his two young children, their mother and their grandmother, said Ingram City Marshal Rowan Zachry.

But, until autopsies are completed Monday “I can’t tell you who our shooter is for sure,” Zachry said.

John David Young was found in a mobile home along with Johnathan Young, 9, Mason Young, 6, Starr Ann Young, 42, and Linda Dale Hughes, 64. All had gunshot wounds.

The two children were still in bed.

Responding to an assault call, law enforcement officers found Hughes alive. She died on the way to the hospital.

Zachry said the family was new to the area and had no record of domestic disturbances since they moved to Ingram.

Ingram is about 75 miles northwest of San Antonio.

An Ingram family of five is dead after an apparent murder-suicide early Sunday morning.

Law enforcement officers suspect John David Young, 38, shot his two children, wife and mother-in-law in a mobile home in the 100 block of Third Street in Ingram.

Authorities identified the victims as Starr Ann Young, 42; Linda Dale Hughes, 64; Jonathan Young, 9; and Mason Young, 6.

All were shot with a 9 mm pistol laying near John David Young’s body. The two boys were found in their beds with multiple gunshot wounds.

It is believed that Hughes, mother of Starr Young, placed a call to 911 at 2:18 a.m. She was alive when deputies arrived, but died en route to the hospital.

The call first came into emergency call dispatch as an assault. The dispatcher who received it only heard breathing at first, and when deputies arrived on the scene, the dispatcher could hear the deputies knocking on the door. Officers forcibly entered the locked home to discover the grisly scene.

“We will have to review the 911 tapes to determine who made the call, but we are pretty certain it was the grandmother (Hughes),” said Ingram City Marshal Rowan Zachry.

The case is being investigated as a murder-suicide, although officials won’t know conclusively until autopsies are performed this afternoon at the Travis County medical examiner’s office.

KCSO investigators are trying to piece together the motivation for the killings.

They report that John David Young had lived in Kerr County for a couple of years and had no criminal record in Texas. He relocated to Kerr County from Colorado.

Although not confirmed, it is believed Starr Young worked at Hilltop Nursing Home in Kerrville, and John David Young was employed by Mooney Airplane Co. Both children attended Ingram Elementary School.

“Anytime you deal with children, it makes things tough,” Zachry said Sunday. “They are really the innocent victims in this case. We will know a whole lot more tomorrow about what exactly happened."
