innocent in the slayings of two women in Pierce County,
where the prosecutor has filed charges that could lead to
the death penalty. Yates, who last week pleaded guilty to 13
counts of murder in Spokane County, was arraigned in Pierce
County Superior Court on two counts of aggravated first-degree
murder in the deaths of Melinda L. Mercer in 1997 and Connie
Ellis in 1998.
