Hiroyuki Tsuchida is a Japanese man who, in June of 2003, beat his mother to death with a baseball bat and conspired to do likewise to the rest of his family. He was 22 years old at the time.

He claimed the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion made him realize that humans were unnecessary beings, and should be eliminated, citing a quote from the series which says "The ultimate conclusion of human evolution is ruin."

He believed if he started by killing his family members, it would make it easier for him to kill strangers. He was pronounced guilty of murder in early 2004 and sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Tsuchida's interpretation of Neon Genesis Evangelion is not generally accepted as valid.

Trivia

There are at least two anime that depict events similar to these:

  • In another animated series, Paranoia Agent (2004), there is a creature in the shape of a boy who attacks people with a broken baseball bat. This series was created shortly after the murder.

Evangelion brings man to kill mother

Accused Murderer came to believe that "The ultimate conclusion of evolution is ruin."

2003-12-02 - Mainichi News

During the opening statements of a murder trial yesterday procecutors stated that Neon Genesis Evangelion influenced a young man who is accused of beating his mother to death with a baseball bat.

Hiroyuki Tsuchida, 22, is said to have killed his mother with a baseball bat because he believed that it would be easier to kill others if he got over his hesitations by first killing familly members.

The prosecutors claims that Tsuchida came to believe the phrase ""The ultimate conclusion of (human) evolution is ruin," from Neon Genesis Evangelion and that he also came to believe that humans were unnecessary being responsible for the destruction of the environment. This brought him to want to kill people.

Eva Killer Guilty

14 years in prison

2004-02-25 - Nikkei.co.jp

Hiroyuki Tsuchida, the 23-year-old (he was 22 at the time of the murder) that killed his mother with a baseball bat, has been found guilty of murder by the Yamagata district court.

Inspired by aspects of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tsuchida believed that human beings are unnecessary beings, responsible for the destruction of the environment. This brought him to want to kill people and he chose to start with family members as he believed it would be easier and it would desensitize him to the process of killing.

Tsuchida was sentenced to fourteen years in prison.
