During a 1990 Sherwood bank robbery, Smith pointed a gun at Kathy Demarest, 40, a bank teller, and told her to "look at me" before shooting her between the eyes. The jury also convicted him of attempted aggravated murder for shooting at bank employee Carolyn R. Vaughan.

A judge later overturned his death sentence, saying Smith's attorney inadequately defended him during the penalty phase.

Interesting fact: Throughout the trial, Smith sat still with his eyes closed, as if he were asleep.

Status: Life sentence.

SHERWOOD, Ore. - A bank teller on a one-day assignment away from her usual branch died yesterday after she was shot in the face during a robbery.

Tualatin police, sheriff's deputies and the FBI arrested a Newberg man about 3 1/2 hours later in a field northeast of town. Randall Loyal Smith, 36, was seized after officers fired tear gas at him.

Kathy Demarest, 40, of Milwaukie was on a one-day assignment at the Key Bank of Oregon branch in Sherwood, a town of 2,900 people south of Portland. She normally worked at the Milwaukie office, bank officials said.

The FBI said the bank was robbed about 11:40 a.m. by a gunman who approached Demarest and demanded that she put money in a brown paper sack.

The man ordered the second teller in the office to approach him, but she refused. He fired a second shot as he fled the bank in a light blue van, the FBI said.

Washington County sheriff's deputies and Tualatin police officers stopped Smith on a road near Highway 99W about a mile northeast of Sherwood, the FBI said. Smith refused to surrender, holding police officers at bay until 2:55 p.m. when FBI and SWAT team members fired the gas and rushed him.
