A sheriff's vehicle parked outside Hawkins' home in Bellevue, Neb.
His landlord, Debora Muruca-Kovac, told reporters that Hawkins was
recently fired from his job at McDonald's and broke up with a
girlfriend. She said he telephoned her about 1 p.m. on Wednesday,
saying he had left a note - a suicide note. Hours later, she saw
victims of the shooting at the Nebraska Medical Center, where she
works as a nurse.
