Suspect charged in deaths of 3 men

By Oscar Avila and Andrew L. Wang - Chicago Tribune

February 19, 2006

Feb. 19--A Chicago man fatally shot three neighbors fixing a car in a Humboldt Park garage last month after they didn't comply with his demands for money because they did not speak English, police said.

Authorities on Saturday charged Antonyo Gipson, 23, with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and one drug-related count in the Jan. 30 shooting. Later in Bond Court, Judge Raymond Myles ordered Gipson held without bail. Gipson, of the 1100 block of North Kedvale Avenue, stole no money in the robbery attempt, police said.

West Side Man Charged In Triple Homicide

From CBS-2 (Chicago)

February 18, 2006

Police finally have a suspect in a triple homicide that left four children without a father, in a case that was cracked by a police dog.

CBS 2's Rafael Romo spoke to the family of Luis Laboy, 42, one of three men killed in a Jan. 30 shooting on the West Side. For Jose Vargas, the oldest of Laboy's four children, the most difficult thing is trying to explain to his siblings that their father is never coming back.

Laboy was shot and killed as he was working in his garage near Division Street and Keeler Avenue.

Two of Laboy's friends, Emanuel Corona-Cruz, 18, and Jose Corona-Cruz, 21, were also killed in the shooting. Police News Affairs Officer Patrice Harper said a 46-year-old man was also shot in the incident but survived.

Antonyo Gipson, 23, of the 1100 block of North Kedvale Avenue, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Police said Gipson confronted the men with the intention of robbing them. The victims [speak no] English, and when the robbery was announced, they did not know what was going on. So with no provocation, the offender started shooting the victim, [sic] police said.

Harrison Area detectives said they were finally able to break the case after their Canine Unit found evidence that tied Gipson to the case.

The nos [sic] of a dog in the unit followed a scent to the bandana that was later linked to Gipson's residence.

DNA found on bandana in alley

A Chicago police dog sniffs out evidence linked to an alleged killer.

On January 30, three people died and another was seriously injured in a shooting at a West Side garage. Antonyo Gipson, 23, is charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. Investigators used DNA evidence found in a bandana near the crime scene to link Gipson to the murders.

The bandana was discovered by 8-year-old Denny, a German Shepard police dog. Denny picked up on the scent and led his handler to the key piece of evidence.

"All of a sudden as we're going down the alley he made a hard left. I followed him in the this dark gangway, I noticed something on the ground he's sniffing it and it's this bandana," said Officer Rick King, Chicago Police Dept.

"I'm glad they caught him but then I wish I could have been the one to have caught him because just like my mom said we want to tell him what he took from us my dad was a big part of the family," said Jose Vargas, victim's stepson.

Police believe Luis Laboy and the other men were shot in an attempted robbery.

Chicago police say this is the first time a police dog has found evidence used for DNA testing that ended up solving a crime.
