China poisoner sentenced to die

BBC News

Wednesday, 31 December, 2003

A Chinese court has sentenced to death a man it said had been inspired by the banned Falun Gong movement to kill 16 people with rat poison.

The court in the eastern city of Wenzhou said that Chen Fuzhao handed out drinks laced with poison.

Fifteen of his victims were beggars, the other was a social worker who died after she drank water poisoned by Chen at a temple.

The killings took place between 25 May and 27 June this year.

According to China's state-run news agency, Xinhua, Chen was inspired by the Falun Gong spiritual movement, which is banned in China.

Xinhua said he committed his month-long killing spree in an effort to reach a state of "spiritual perfection".

Falun Gong claims to have millions of followers, but it was banned by China in 1999 and labelled an "evil cult".

Hundreds of its members are in jail and the movement claims that the Chinese authorities have killed and tortured several hundred followers.

The rat-poison case is the latest in a series of mass murders which have been given great prominence in the Chinese media in recent months.

Falungong Cult Murderer Sentenced to Death

Xinhua News Agency

December 31, 2003

A Falungong cult follower who poisoned and killed 15 innocent people was given death penalty by a court in east China's Zhejiang Province Tuesday afternoon.

Chen Fuzhao, an assistant clinician in a small hospital in Cangnan county, was found to have poisoned 15 vagrant beggars and trash pickers by giving them beverages mixed with rat poison from May 25 to June 27, 2003.

In the first instance judgment issued by the municipal intermediate people's court of Wenzhou, to which Cangnan county belongs, he was also found guilty of putting poison into a thermos flask containing boiled water in the kitchen of a Buddhist temple. A female worshipper drank the water, fell to ground and died.

Chen admitted the charges of poisoning the 16 innocent people to death in the trial.

According to the court verdict, Chen had started to practice Falungong cult in 1996. Under the mental control of the so-called Falungong "master" Li Hongzhi, he gradually came up with the idea of "upgrading" himself and raising his own power by massacring others with beggars and trash pickers as the target of his assaults.

Many locals watched the trial and heard the verdict.

Falun Gong Cult Followers Cruel in Killing the Innocent

China-Embassy.org

July 14, 2003

A follower of the Falun Gong cult has shocked society by poisoning 17 innocent people, most beggars or vagrants, from May 25 to June 27 this year under the Falun Gong cult doctrines, according to a commentary to be carried in People's Daily on July 15.

By now more than 1,700 innocent people have been killed by Falun Gong cult followers in practicing the cult's doctrines of "clearing crimes committed in a previous life" or "complete oneself in this life" either by killing themselves or killing others.

Chen Fuzhao, a 29-year-old dermatologist from Cangnan County of Wenzhou City in Zhejiang Province, east China, was one of them.

Under his "master" Li Hongzhi's direction, Chen started killing, first dogs then human beings.

According to the heretical ideas of the Falun Gong cult, Chen believed killing could improve his own power to reach the ideal state advocated in the Falun Gong cult.

The crime once again showed that the cult still threatens society's stability and safety and the crimes once again ridicule the cult's so-called doctrines of "truth, kindness and tolerance," the commentary says.

The commentary calls on the people to remain vigilance against the Falun Gong cult and take effective measures to crack down on the illegal crimes organized by the cult to protect people's safety.

"When I was reading the doctrines on Feb. 17, I suddenly felt Master Li Hongzhi told me to do bad things, which though contrary to my usual practices, would help promote my power, " Chen said, " and I felt the bad things included killing, setting fires, and all the bad things are extremely good for our practices."

"I began killing mosquitoes, flies, then dogs and humans," Chen said.

With poisoned drinks, Chen killed 16 beggars and vagrants in streets and one Buddhist believer.

"Most people would not take my drinks, so I chose beggars and vagrants, " Chen said.

When asked how many people he wanted to kill, Chen answered he wanted to kill all human kind within one year.

Chen used to have a happy family before he was obsessed by the Falun Gong cult in 1996. "He was good-tempered and often chatted with me, but after he practiced Falun Gong, he talked little and was often seen sitting in bed murmuring with weird looks," Chen's mother said.

Falun Gong Practitioner Kills 16 People

China-Embassy.org

July 14, 2003

Chen Fuzhao, a 29-year-old "Falun Gong" practitioner, was detained for allegedly killing 16 beggars and vagrants and injuring one more by supplying them with poisoned food and water in Cangnan County of East China's Zhejiang Province, provincial police said on July 2.

Chen was taken into custody and further investigations are going on.

Chen was believed to have put a kind of rat poison, named "Dushuqiang" in Chinese, into food and drinks and then offered them to beggars and junk men on 17 occasions between May 25 and June 26 in Cangnan County's Longgang Town.

Chen told the police that it is beneficial to his "Falun Gong" beliefs to kill beggars or vagrants, whom are regarded by him as the highest-level people among all kinds of human beings.

Medical experts said that "Dushuqiang" has been found in the stomachs of Chen's victims.

Among the 17 victims, only one is still alive and is receiving emergency hospital care.

A death too far in Falun Gong's history

July 4, 2003

Chinadaily.com.cn

The appalling truth of the mysterious death of 16 beggars and rubbish collectors in Cangnan, East China's Zhejiang Province was finally uncovered by the tenacious digging by more than 500 police officers in the past week.

The accused serial killer turned out to be a Falun Gong practitioner who allegedly poisoned the victims in order to boost his own "efficacy."

Believing beggars and rubbish collectors "belong to the highest echelons" of humanity, Chen Fuzhao, confessed to killing the 16 and fatally poisoning another person between May 25 and June 26 with ratsbane. His motive, to "upgrade the efficacy" of his "Falun Gong cultivation."

As the once prominent cult fades from the public eye, the cruelty of the Cangnan killings reminds us of the damaging potential of its pernicious vestige.

As one of those who happened to witness Falun Gong's besieging of the Zhongnanhai, China's political headquarters, on April 25, 1999, I had no particular animosity against the average Falun Gong practitioner in the very beginning. Instead, eager to make sense of their outlandish lexicons, I read through the earliest works of their enshrined Master Li Hongzhi, which in itself required the utmost perseverance to complete.

The well-touted and quoted tome among the secretive Falun Gong communities was, in my secular eyes, but a juxtaposition of Buddhist sutras, rituals of rural superstition, qi gong, and undisguised self-glorification. It was more like megalomaniac sleep-talking than the inspired and sacred teachings of a saint, as Master Li is often portrayed.

The real-life stories of Falun Gong practitioners convinced us that most of them were ordinary decent people who were driven to the cult by life's frustrations.

Master Li's bragging of being able to elevate them to a "higher world," free of secular life's misfortunes, could not but be farcical for us common folk. But it somehow became spiritual candy and balm for some fellows who feel abandoned in real life.

In spite of the government-led crusade against Falun Gong, many of us had not seen the true perniciousness of the cult until people started to be killed.

When their unsolicited messages landed in our mailboxes, we did no more than simply block them, possibly even feeling sorry for denying them. When they jammed public television channels with their signals, not all of us took it seriously, thinking it was no more than a desperate stunt to get their voice across. Everyone fears loneliness. Everyone needs listeners.

When they immolated themselves into their coveted "higher world," some of us tended to accept their choice while lamenting the tragic deaths.

Even those instances where they killed their family members, we reserved some sympathy for them, thinking at least in their ludicrous fantasy they were trying to "elevate" their beloved ones to happiness.

But the homicides in Cangnan showed that Falun Gong's preaching can result in more than suicide. If the self-elevation of Falun Gong practitioners has to be conditional on the killing of innocent others, it constitutes a heinous threat to public security.

And that brooks no tolerance.

16 beggars die from poisoning in East China province

To Alleviate Jiang Zemin's Fears Regarding the Murder of Mr. Liu Chengjun, Xinhua News Publishes Another Fabricated Story Slandering Falun Gong

By Minghui.org reporter Ms. Ouyang Fei

ClearHarmony.net

Monday 12th January 2004

Even on New Years Eve of 2003, Xinhua News (the official news agency of the Chinese communist government) was actively slandering Falun Gong. The state's official news agency published a fabricated story claiming that a homeless man named Chen Fuzhao was a Falun Gong practitioner, and that he was sentenced to death for killing people by poisoning them. We note that this poisoning incident occurred between May and June of 2003. The homeless man, Chen Fuzhao, murdered 15 out-of-town beggars.

Why did Xinhua News choose to publish another slanderous story at year-end 2003? Was it no more than coincidence that Jiang Zemin's evil political cohorts had tortured Mr. Liu Chengjun only shortly before this story was published? Liu Chengjun was a Falun Gong practitioner who broadcasted TV programs clarifying the truth about Falun Gong on the Changchun City cable TV network in March of 2002. [Please note that there are no available venues for Falun Gong practitioners to defend themselves against the government's fabricated accusations and slanderous publications.] It is important to note that Mr. Liu Chengjun's wrongful death has triggered a series of protests worldwide.

Immediately after Jiang's group of political cohorts murdered Mr. Liu Chengjun, Xinhua News started a new round of persecution in 2004 by associating a public assassin with Falun Gong.

There is no doubt that Falun Gong's teachings forbid killing. The founder of Falun Gong Mr. Li Hongzhi sets forth in his book Zhuan Falun (the primary text for Falun Gong), "For practitioners, we have set the strict requirement that they cannot kill lives." ("The Issue of Killing" in Lecture Seven of Zhuan Falun)

In an article dated July 2, 2003 Xinhua News fabricated an absurd theory that was contrary to Falun Gong's principles. They claimed that Chen Fuzhao murdered 15 beggars because of the Falun Gong principles. [of July 20, 1999, Jiang Zemin banned all Falun Gong's books, videos, and audios in China. Thus, people in China are unable to obtain a copy of Zhuan Falun to discover Xinhua News' fabricated stories.] Xinnhua News published the reasons why Chen Fuzhao, whom they claimed to be a cultivator, must kill people. They said it was so he could rise in his cultivation level. The report claimed that being a beggar would help achieve the highest level of cultivation, and therefore Chen Fuzhao must kill beggars.

The Xinhua News' invented theory was illogical and preposterous. While it may be technically difficult to become a millionaire, far fewer difficulties are encountered when one wishes to become a beggar. If one is determined to become a beggar, one simply abandons everything one owns, becomes a street person, and begs for food with a begging bowl. That is all it takes to reach the so-called "highest cultivation level" based on Xinhua News' theory of cultivation. Why even make the effort to kill people?

Apparently Xinhua News realized how foolish it was to publish such an absurd story. Thus, when it decided at the end of 2003 to again slander Falun Gong and revisit the criminal indictment of Chen Fuzhao, it changed the story and no longer claimed that being a beggar would allow one to reach the highest level of cultivation. To prove its point to the public, Xinhua News made up an equally bizarre and absurd cultivation theory. It alleged that Chen Fuzhao tried to "increase the ˇ®potency of his energy' by killing people." It no longer asserted that being a beggar would allow one to reach the highest level of cultivation; it now claimed that, "Chen Fuzhao made beggars and homeless men his killing targets."

Actually, even CCTV (Chinese communist government's official TV station) wasn't willing to pick up Xinhua News' preposterous theory in their separate effort to slander Falun Gong. On July 14, 2003, more than 10 days after Xinhua News published its article on Chen Fuzhao, CCTV announced another equally preposterous cultivation theory. They fabricated a different cultivation theory called "reverse cultivation," which it expounded on during its talk show "Focus Interview." CCTV stated that once a cultivator reaches a specific level based on the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance, he has to cultivate himself based on the opposites of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance. CCTV claimed this to be the "real" reason why Chen Fuzhao killed people. As to why Chen Fuzhao killed only beggars, "Focus Interview" said it was a pure coincidence.

CCTV's "reverse cultivation" theory is even more illogical than the Xinhua News theory. If trying to become a man of high morality will eventually make a man depraved, does CCTV imply that by following Jiang Zemin's wicked deeds the Chinese society will sooner or later return to morality?

Every time Jiang Zemin's group of political cohorts instigates people's hatred toward Falun Gong by using slander, they fabricate a variety of lies, which are essential, as they can not quote directly from any of the Falun Gong books. Why couldn't they quote directly from Falun Gong's books to support these slanderous reports? Because Falun Gong texts clearly forbid Falun Gong practitioners from killing lives or committing suicide.

"For practitioners, we have set the strict requirement that they cannot kill lives." ("The Issue of Killing" in Lecture Seven of Zhuan Falun) (Zhuan Falun is the primary text for Falun Gong)

"Question: The third question is the issue of killing as mentioned in the book. Killing a life is a very big sin. If a person commits suicide, does it count as a sin or not?

Master: It counts as a sin. [...] Committing suicide has another sin. This is because a person's life is pre-arranged. You have disrupted the sequence of the god's entire layout. Through the obligations you carry out to society, between people there is this kind of interrelationship. If the person dies, won't this entire sequence disrupt the god's arrangement then? If you disrupt it, he will not let you go. Therefore, committing suicide is sinful." ("Falun Dafa Lecture in Sydney")

Jiang Zemin's group of political cohorts clearly recognizes that Falun Gong forbids killing lives and committing suicide; therefore, they destroyed and banned Falun Gong books in China. They wanted to assure that non-practitioners in China would be unable to verify the facts and would thus believe the preposterous lies disseminated about Falun Gong. Their lies have become so illogical that even their fellow conspirators find each other's versions ridiculous.

The official Chinese news began using Chen Fuzhou's murder to slander Falun Gong in July 2003. It was because July 20 was an unforgettable day for Falun Gong practitioners. On July 20, 1999 Jiang Zemin ignored everyone else's favorable opinions of Falun Gong and intentionally began the public persecution of the practice. Since then, Falun Gong practitioners throughout the world have and will continue to hold public protests calling for an end to the persecution against Falun Gong. As July 20, 2003 approached, Jiang ordered the Chinese media to publish slanderous reports, as he wanted to instigate people's hatred towards Falun Gong. He needed to justify his persecution against Falun Gong. To reach this goal, they claimed that Chen Fuzhao was a Falun Gong practitioner and that he followed Falun Gong's teachings by killing people.

The aforementioned serial killing case was not the only one of its kind. Another such serial murder case occurred in Zhejiang Province a month before Chen Fuzhao committed murder. A man named Chen Yongfeng killed ten beggars and dismembered nine of their bodies. The frequency and brutality of these serial murder cases reveal an acute social problem in Zhejiang Province. Why is Jiang's group of political cohorts refusing to restore public safety and social order in that area? Why are they using the security resources for persecuting Falun Gong practitioners, people who are known to be of high morality? According to Xinhua News, it was under the direct "supervision" of the Minister of Public Security Ministry, Mr. Zhou Yongkang, that the murder case of Chen Fuzhao in Zhejiang Province was quickly solved. Who is Mr. Zhou Yongkang? He is one of the key collaborators with Jiang Zemin in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. When he visited the United States, Falun Gong practitioners in the United States filed a civil lawsuit against Zhou Yongkang and served him an official summons from the United States Federal Court.

In examining the Xinhua News reports over the years, one will discover that murders by poisoning are widespread in today's Chinese society. It is an indisputable fact that Falun Gong forbids its practitioners to kill lives or commit suicide. There are no "facts" to support Jiang Zemin's persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. Jiang's group of evil political cohorts must lie to the Chinese people and ban Falun Gong books, which would expose their lies, to instigate and sustain Chinese people's hatred of Falun Gong.

There is another downside to CCTV's cultivation theory. If Chen Fuzhou was cultivating according to "reverse cultivation," or according to the "reverse" of Falun Gong's teaching, then logically speaking Chen Fuzhao's killing behavior would have nothing to do with Falun Gong.

For example, if an operator refuses to follow the safety instructions while operating machinery, and insists on doing the opposite of the safety instructions, is anyone entitled to attack the validity of the safety instructions? If one is indeed entitled to attack the validity of the safety instructions, then, by the same logic, one is entitled to attack everything in the world.

Xinhua News also stated in their report, "During the trial, the defendant Mr. Chen Fuzhao and his attorney were given sufficient opportunities for defense. The local residents of different walks of life also sat through the trial and heard the judge's verdict."

I cannot help questioning their truthfulness when Xinhua News said "local residents of different walks of life also sat through the trial." Were Falun Gong practitioners allowed to attend this trial? Were Falun Gong practitioners allowed to testify that Mr. Chen Fuzhao was not doing anything remotely close to what Falun Gong requires of its practitioners? I think we can reach a conclusion by reviewing what happens when Chinese communist party leaders visit foreign countries. Once it was found that a journalist in the country visited was also a Falun Gong practitioner. The Chinese Embassy and consulate staff used all kinds of underhanded tactics to assure that he/she was not allowed to participate. They wanted to assure that the visiting party leaders would not be contradicted. Thus it follows that if the Chinese communist government does not allow Falun Gong practitioners to participate in a public event in democratic countries, they would not allow practitioners to be present during trials in China.

In conclusion, the year-end 2003 Xinhua News slanderous report has once again confirmed that Xinhua News does not understand Falun Gong, and that Chen Fuzhao was not a Falun Gong practitioner.
