Nageezi Woman Pleads to Murder

ABQJournal.com

FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) — A 21-year-old Nageezi woman accused of beating another woman to death in a fight over a boyfriend has pleaded to second-degree murder.

Patricia Ignacio initially was charged with an open charge of murder in the death of 40-year-old Irene Armenta of Lake Valley last November.

She entered an Alford plead to the second-degree murder charge Thursday. An Alford plea means a defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges prosecutors might have enough evidence to convict.

Ignacio faces a mandatory 15-year prison sentence.

Armenta's body was found Nov. 25 partially buried by sand and broken cement in an undeveloped area of Farmington.

21-year-old accused of killing Farmington woman after fighting over a boyfriend.

Patricia Ignacio, 21, of Nageezi, is charged with an open count of murder in the death of Irene Armenta, whose body was found in an undeveloped area on Nov. 25, allegedly after fighting over a boyfriend, the Farmington Daily Times reported.

Police said Ignacio, who was arrested Saturday, may have been intoxicated during the fight in which she allegedly hit the 40-year-old Armenta’s head repeatedly against a rock, the Daily Times said.

“We had information that Irene was upset because she thought Patricia was seeing Irene’s boyfriend, and that’s where the fight started,” Farmington police Detective Sgt. Bruce Holiday told the paper.

After police identified the body on Friday, detectives linked Ignacio to the crime through a Crime Stoppers tip and information they received about an unrelated fight Ignacio was involved in earlier on the day of the killing, according to the Daily Times.

Detectives are still investigating which woman started the fatal fight, and toxicology tests are pending as to whether the victim may have been drunk at the time of the fight, the paper reported.

Ignacio, who is also charged with tampering with evidence, has no prior felony convictions in New Mexico, the Daily Times said.

FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a 21-year-old Nageezi woman in the death of a woman whose body was found last week in Farmington.

Patricia Ignacio is charged with an open count of murder and tampering with evidence in the death of Irene Armenta.

Farmington detectives followed leads over the holiday weekend that eventually led to Ignacio being a person of interest in the case. She was arrested Saturday during a traffic stop and brought in for questioning.

Investigators said Ignacio had been involved in an altercation with Armenta over a boyfriend and alcohol may have been a factor.
