Zabawa was arrested as a suspect in the Feb. 3, 2007 shooting deaths of Tracy Kruger, 40, and his 13-year-old son, Alec and the wounding of his wife, Hilary, 41. Zabawa was charged with two counts of second degree murder and bail was set at $2 million. (John Cross - The Free Press)

Authorities record a crime scene just outside the Kruger residence, a few miles south of Waseca. The pickup on the left was used by the “person of interest” detained by police to reach the residence.

He used a stolen vehicle to flee. The SUV on the right was owned by the Krugers. Police didn’t say why it was in the ditch.

During the trial, jurors watched a videotape of state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents interrogate
26-year-old Michael Zabawa. The interview took place five hours after the shootings

Tracy Kruger and his 13-year-old son, Alec, both on right, are being remembered in Waseca after being killed in a random shooting Saturday. Hilary Kruger, left, survived the attack because Alec called 911. The couple’s youngest son, Zak, lower left, wasn’t home when the shooting occurred.

Deputy Brad Milbrath described Alec, lower right in the portrait, as a hero for saving his mother’s life.

Zak Kruger talked with his aunt, Sarah Houdek, during the snowmobile races for Waseca’s Sleigh and Cutter Festival. Zak’s father, Tracy, and older brother, Alec, were shot and killed by a home intruder Feb. 3. His mother, Hilary, also was shot and remains in critical condition.

Tracy and Alec were honored during the race.
